The Story of My Experiments with Truth (or My Experiments with Truth) – the autobiography of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (or Mahatma Gandhi) covers his life from early childhood through to 1920, and is a popular and influential book. It was initiated at the instance of Swami Anand and other close co-workers of Gandhi, in his mother-tongue Gujarātī entitled સત્યના પ્રયોગો અથવા આત્મકથા Satyanā Prayogo athvā Ātmakathā.

Mahadevbhai Desai translated this book into English:

Mahadev Desai (1892—1942), a journalist, was born in 1892 in the Surat district of Gujarat state in India. He graduated from the Bombay University with B.A. (first class), majoring in Philosophy and Logic. This was followed by a Law degree, and in 1915 he qualified as a lawyer.

Owing to his love for literature and to support his education, Mahadev Desai elected to translate John Morley’s book On Compromise into Gujarati language in a competition for best Gujarati translation sponsored by Forbes Gujarati Sabha (See: Alexander Kinloch Forbes). After wining the prize, he went to meet with Gandhi (who returned to India in 1915) in Ahmedabad to seek his advice. Some authorities, however, suggest that Desai met with Gandhi in relation with a letter that the former has sent expressing his views and criticism on Gandhi’s proposed ashram in Ahmedabad. Anyhow, this was their first meeting, and in November 1917, Mahadev Desai decided to join Gandhi on a full-time basis – an intimate association that lasted for nearly 25 years until the early death of Desai in 1942.

એક જ દાણા માંથી !

        રાજસ્થાનના ડુગારી ગામમાં મેળો ભરાયેલો. ખેતીવાડી ખાતા તરફથી તેમાં એક પ્રદર્શન ગોઠવાયેલું. ત્યાં ઘઉં ના સુધારેલા બિયારણનો નમૂનો રાખેલો, તેની પર રામનારાયણ નામના ખેડૂતની નજર પડી. તે લેવાનું એને મન થયું, પણ ખાતાના અધિકારીએ કહ્યું કે તે વેચવા માટે નથી. હતાશ થઈને રામનારાયણ પાછો ગયો. બીજે દિવસે ફરી એ ત્યાં જઈને ઊભો. થોડી રકઝક પછી અધિકારીએ તેને એ ઊંચી જાતના ઘઉંનો નમૂનો આપ્યો – પણ એક જ દાણો !

        એને મોંઘામૂલા રતન ની જેમ જાળવીને રામનારાયણ લઈ ગયો. પોતાના ખેતરની સારામાં સારી જગા પસંદ કરી, ત્યાં ખાતર નાખીને એ દાણો વાવ્યો. રોજ તેની કાળજી લેવા માંડ્યો. થોડા દિવસે અંકુર ફૂટ્યો. છોડ મોટો થવા લાગ્યો. અને આખરે તેની ઉપર ઘઉંની ડૂંડીઓ ઝૂલવા લાગી. પાક લણ્યો ત્યારે, એક દાણો વાવેલો તેમાંથી પોણો રતલ ઘઉં નીકળ્યા ! રામનારાયણનું હૈયું હરખે ભરાઇ ગયું. એ ઘઉંની પોટલી સાચવીને પટારામાં મૂકી દીધી.

        બીજે વરસે એ પોણો રતલ દાણા એણે પાછા વાવ્યા. વખત જતાં એના ખેતરમાં તેના છ – છ ફૂટ ઊંચા છોડ થયા. આસપાસના લોકો તે જોઈને અજાયબ થયા. આ વખતે તેર ગણો પાક ઉતર્યો ને દસ રતલ ઘઉં નીપજ્યાં. પછીને વરસે એ દસ રતલ વાવતાં તેમાંથી ત્રણ મણ ઘઉં પાક્યા – ઊંચી જાતના ત્રણ મણ ઘઉં

How to provide hyperlink in Microsoft Excel:

Function =HYPERLINK(“url_link”, “display_name”) is used in MS Excel for creating hyperlinks.

If we have created all the links using Microsoft word — it replaces simple quotes with smart quotes — which excel doesn’t take for hyperlink function. We have to replace all smart-quotes (“”) with simple quotes (“”).

Mainframe Tips:

If we are passing data from JCL PARM=”data” then we have to take care in linkage section for removing the wrapper using picture s9(04) comp. and then the catch the real data.

The data we pass through SYSIN can be read by ACCEPT statements in COBOL

Traveled in New Air Conditioned VOLVO City Bus in chennai

I traveled in new Air conditioned VOLVO City Bus in Chennai.

A bit costly but good journey.  Conductor announces every station on PA System inside the bus.

Tickets are also printed on handy lesser ticket machine. Ticket printout is similar to the one we get transaction statement from ATM machine.

વર રાજાને કાઢી ગયા.
ડિસેમ્બર માસમાં પિતાજીના મિત્ર કે જેઓ વર્ષોથી કેનેડામાં સ્થાયી થયેલાં છે તેઓ તેમના પરિવાર સાથે એક મહિના માટે અમદાવાદ આવ્યા હતાં. તેમનો પૂત્ર સેમ મારી જ ઉમરનો હોવાથી તેને અમદાવાદ બતાવવાની જવાબદારી મેં ઉપાડી લીધી હતી. નાનપણથી જ કેનેડામાં ઉછેર થવાથી તે ગુજરાતી બહુ સારું સમજી કે બોલી શકતો નહોતો.

તે જ અરસામાં મારા મિત્રના લગ્ન હોવાથી, હું સેમને લઇ મિત્રના ઘરે પહોંચી ગયો. હું હજુ તો કંઇ બોલું તે પહેલા જ સેમ બાજુમાં ઊભેલા વડિલોને પૂછવા માંડ્યો, “વરરાજાને કાઢી ગયા કે હજી વાર છે?”
